Tribute & Message From The Family

Lloyd M. Mattson, 71, of Palm Springs, died Friday, May 13, 2016, at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California. He was born September 7, 1944, to Clarence and Evelyn [Olson] Mattson, in Glenwood, Minnesota.

Born during the transition between the Greatest Generation and the Baby Boomers, he had a foot in both camps and trudged through years of cancer with the tenacity of the greatest and the spirit of the boomers.

He is survived by Jean Mattson, sister-in-law, of Detroit Lakes, MN, niece Samantha Gulon and her children Sydney Rae and John Peter, also of Detroit Lakes, and niece Jennifer Mattson Wegner [Robert] of Alexandria, MN, one aunt, DeLoris Carlson, of Columbia Heights, MN, many cousins, special friend Gary Gleason of Minneapolis, the Minnesota Gleasons of Northfield, his other family, and a host of devoted friends in the Coachella Valley and around the world.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ray Mattson.

Lloyd was a graduate of Glenwood High School and St. Cloud University in Minnesota. He majored in elementary education and student taught in the Anoka Hennepin school district in the Minneapolis suburbs. While student teaching, the superintendent of schools observed him in the classroom and hired him on the spot to become a full-time teacher. Lloyd spent 34 years in that district, becoming the quintessential fifth grade teacher, and retiring in 2000.

Lloyd was a master at friendship because he was reliable, kind, and devoted, as well as an expert listener to young and old alike.

Condolence & Memory Journal

So sorry to read about Lloyd's passing. We worked together at Evergreen Park Elementary for several years. Lloyd was always helpful and I enjoyed being hid colleague in Anoka Hennepin Schools.
We stay in touch over social media and I knew he was fighting cancer. So sorry I missed the funeral.

It grieves me to have to send this message but I know that Lloyd is certainly in a better place. Jean, Samantha, Jennifer and family I know that you are missing Lloyd already terribly. I know that it won't be the same for me in Palm Springs. I always looked forward to our pool time together. His conversations and exercising in the pool always brought informative information and a lot of humor. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Love,

Sharon

I have known Lloyd for few years, but never met in person. Last time we communicated he told me that it's his Chemo day at the hospital. i kept checking on him, but he was never online. I feared the worst and called him at home, but there was no answer.

To Lloyd's sister in law: Thank you for looking after Lloyd. May God bless you.

I'm sorry I never met you Lloyd. May you rest in peace.

Eli

I shall remember the day I came to live with you and your family. You were in a diaper running around. How soon you grew up and turned into a young man ready to take on the world. Whether or not you fulfilled all your dreams only you know. You fulfilled a few of them. Now I'm going to say good bye to you, which wasn't in the time table. But I know you not suffering anymore. Your at peace.

So my brother or cousin as the case may be say "hello" to all and we'll see you in future years to come.

Love you. Rest in Peace.

Lloyd was my neighbor downstairs in Palm Springs. We have been neighbors for almost 11 years. He was a great guy and so nice to be around with. When my late husband died last year, he was so thoughtful bringing us dinner a few times. That's the kind of person he was very kind and he had a gentle soul. He will definitely be missed. Rest in peace Lloyd and say hello to Ted for me!

Lloyd, even though it was every couple of years that we'd see each other, the past 30 years were filled with wonderful memories of laughter, road trips, dancing, and talking into the early hours. Say hi to Jay and give him my love. I love you my dear friend. I will miss you greatly.

As a teacher the dragonfly represented your ability to give kids an extra set of wings when needed. Now those wings are yours. Rest easy. Your God-daughter and niece

I am sorry to hear about Lloyd's passing. I was a young teacher at McKinley when he taught there. He was always so funny and happy. I only saw him smiling.
