Edward James Swanson, a 14-year resident of California and Twentynine Palms, died Dec. 16, 2010, at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage due to cancer. He was 58 years old.

The son of Robert E. Swanson and Mary J. Carbona, he was born Dec. 19, 1951, at Hillaman Air Force Base in New Mexico.

Mr. Swanson served in the U.S. Marine Corps and had been retired for 23 years. He was in the Civil Service, working at the electro-optics shop at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center for 14 years

Mr. Swanson is survived by his wife of 37 years, Tho Thi “Lan” (Nguyen) Swanson, of Twentynine Palms; sons Hung Minh James Swanson of Santa Ana and Edward James Swanson Jr. of Germany; daughter Ericka Lin Andaya of Yucca Valley; and 10 grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at 10 a.m. and a memorial service at 11 a.m. Dec. 19, at Wiefels and Son Twentynine Palms Funeral Chapel. Father Ignatius Rasquinha will officiate.

Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery Dec. 24.
