Eliane Marie Pepper, age 84, died at Glenbrook Skilled Nursing in Carlsbad, CA on July 12th. Ms Pepper was born in Rio de Janiero, Brazil to George and Maria Barthel. Eliane was a strong, independent, talented, woman who accomplished anything she set her mind to. In 1951, she left her family in Brazil to come to the United States at age 18. Speaking Portuguese, French, and Italian, she soon learned English by watching American television and going to the grocery store to match product pictures with words. From her first job at a Montgomery Ward's department store selling drapes, her artistic talent and design asthetic expanded and eventually led her to a career as an accomplished interior and furniture designer. By mid-life, she had become a successful business owner, manufacturing her own designs and distributing them world wide. In her retirement, she pursued her love of golf and travel. She wrote a book about golf resorts and several articles related to golf for a variety of publications. Eliane enjoyed design, art, fashion, travel, golf, photography, dancing, socializing, and playing bridge. Ms Pepper is survived by her daughter, Lisa; son, Jim; grandaugher, Kelly, and great grandson, Wyatt. Memorial contributions are welcome and should be sent to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org
