Our loving husband and Dad, Fred P. Zonfrilli, passed away at his home in Carlsbad, Ca., where he had lived for the past 15 years. His family was at his side when he lost his brave battle against progressive polyneuropathy. Fred was 79 years old.
Fred grew up in Chatham, N.J., the first child of Joseph A. and Theresa M. (Iorio) Zonfrilli. After graduating from Fairleigh Dickinson University he worked in the family businesses, Sano Corp. (making musical amplifiers and importing accordians) and Major Music School (where Fred played and gave accordian lessons).
Music was a big part of his life - he played professionally and loved playing the piano for family and friends.
On September 2, 1967, Fred married the love of his life, Barbara A. Johansen. They raised their children, Michael and Susan in Gillette, N.J. They had a wonderful life.
In the 80's Fred used his electronics background and went to work for the Department of Defense as a quality control engineer. He retired in 2002 and headed west, with Barbara, to be near their children. They bought a home, a baby grand piano and golf clubs - Fred enjoyed them all. More importantly to Fred was his family - son, Michael and wife Andrea, and daughter Susan Axson and husband, Tony. He so loved his grandkids, Mitchell Zonfrilli, Rosemary Zonfrilli, Nathan Axson and Charlotte Axson. Having recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, Fred and Barbara renewed their wedding vows several days before his passing.
Fred's sister Felicia Lamb, and husband Richard, and his brother, Joe, who flew in from N.J., shared happy memories with him in recent days. They loved him and he loved them.
Fred also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews, friends from his youth and good friends in San Diego.
We would also like to thank, Cari Drolet, Fred's caregiver, and Elizabeth Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Fred.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fred's memory to the Mitchell Thorp Foundation or Make-A-Wish.
Fred will be interred at Old Mission San Luis Rey on Tuesday, December 12 at 11:00 am.
