Lloyd M. Mattson, 71, of Palm Springs, died Friday, May 13, 2016, at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California. He was born September 7, 1944, to Clarence and Evelyn [Olson] Mattson, in Glenwood, Minnesota.

Born during the transition between the Greatest Generation and the Baby Boomers, he had a foot in both camps and trudged through years of cancer with the tenacity of the greatest and the spirit of the boomers.

He is survived by Jean Mattson, sister-in-law, of Detroit Lakes, MN, niece Samantha Gulon and her children Sydney Rae and John Peter, also of Detroit Lakes, and niece Jennifer Mattson Wegner [Robert] of Alexandria, MN, one aunt, DeLoris Carlson, of Columbia Heights, MN, many cousins, special friend Gary Gleason of Minneapolis, the Minnesota Gleasons of Northfield, his other family, and a host of devoted friends in the Coachella Valley and around the world.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ray Mattson.

Lloyd was a graduate of Glenwood High School and St. Cloud University in Minnesota. He majored in elementary education and student taught in the Anoka Hennepin school district in the Minneapolis suburbs. While student teaching, the superintendent of schools observed him in the classroom and hired him on the spot to become a full-time teacher. Lloyd spent 34 years in that district, becoming the quintessential fifth grade teacher, and retiring in 2000.

Lloyd was a master at friendship because he was reliable, kind, and devoted, as well as an expert listener to young and old alike.
