Patricia Wight-Holby, 85, died peacefully in her sleep on April 22 after a sudden illness. She was surrounded by her children at her home in Palm Desert California.
Patricia was born on June 24, 1929, in Schenectady, NY, the daughter of Frances and William Page. She resided in Lawrenceville, NJ for over 40 years and in 2000, remarried and retired to Palm Desert, CA.
Music, in many forms, was Patricia's lifelong passion. She was introduced to the organ at a young age, and studied with her beloved teacher and mentor, Helen
Henshaw. Patricia was asked to accompany church choirs and substitute for church organists, even in her young teenage years. She received her bachelor of music degree at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, and received her master's degree in Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary in NY. Patricia went on to become the organist and choir director at First Presbyterian Church in Princeton, NJ, and later at St. James Catholic Church in Jamesburg, NJ. Throughout her life, she enjoyed teaching piano lessons to children of all ages. Patricia spent many summers with her family at Chautauqua Institution in N.Y where she was employed to play the carillon in the Miller Bell Tower on Chautauqua Lake. Her family has many cherished memories of their summers in Chautauqua.
In midlife, Patricia felt called to the ministry, and received her Master's of Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1983. In 1990, she was ordained at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Trenton, NJ, one of the first women ordained to the Episcopal priesthood. This calling led her to become a hospital chaplain at St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, NJ and St. Lawrence Rehabilitation center in Lawrenceville, NJ. In addition, she served in this capacity during her
retirement at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage California.
Patricia is survived by her husband, William H. Holby, her 4 children, Margaret Mattson, Nancy Wight, Clifford Wight, and Carolyn Gladwell from her previous marriage to Kenneth R. Wight, 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial service will be held at 3:00PM, Thursday, April 30 at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, California.
The family has requested that all condolence cards be sent to Carolyn Gladwell, c/o FitzHenry-Wiefels, 44-700 San Pablo Avenue, Palm Desert CA 92260.
