Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt, Phyllis Phillonese Doucette Oswald passed away on Monday, April 11, 2016 in Rancho Mirage, California. Born in Portland, Oregon as her parents, Eugene and Caroline Doucette traveled west to settle in Pleasanton, California. Phyllis spent many childhood summers during the depression era, living in Yosemite Valley while her mother worked in the tourist camps. Phyllis was a graduate of Amador Valley High School and was the only female student in her graduating class to go onto college. Her college studies were interrupted by WWII and she proudly worked at the shipyards as a welder earning enough money to enroll at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. Phyllis was an illustrator and painter working in a variety of mediums throughout her life. Phyllis met her husband Bob as they worked as life drawing art models and they married in 1949 in Santa Monica. Phyllis raised five children in Los Altos and spent many hours doing pen and ink drawings of the historic homes that were still in the area. In her 40's, she returned to college and completed her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in 1971 at San Jose State University. Phyllis taught art classes throughout the Santa Clara Valley and was a magazine layout graphic artist, textbook saleswoman and administrative assistant at Rolm and IBM. Phyllis and Bob enjoyed many wonderful years of retirement living in Windsor, Oroville and Palm Desert. Phyllis was the president of the California Garden Clubs, Luther Burbank District and was an avid gardener her entire life.Throughout their 62 year marriage, Phyllis and Bob traveled extensively and their art was inspired by the beauty of the California landscapes they so enjoyed. Phyllis and Bob moved to the desert ten years ago to join their daughters. Bob, her husband of 62 years pre-deceased her in 2011. Phyllis was an active member of the Joslyn Center "Lunch Bunch" Quilting Club, Coachella Valley Quilt Guild and Knitting Guild of the Desert. She loved her artistic life of quilting, drawing, knitting and meeting wonderful new friends. Phyllis is survived by her five children, Laura of Sacramento, John of Oroville, Ann of Indio, Joyce of Bremerton, Washington and Paula of Santa Rosa and by 15 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held at 2 p.m. and services at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 16. The viewing and services will be held at Christ of the Desert Roman Catholic Chapel, 73441 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert, California 92260. In memoriam for the wonderful support provided to Phyllis for the care her husband Bob received, the family requests any donations to be made to the Eisenhower Hospital Memory Care Center - Adult Care Center.
