Maria Dolores Zapata Callaway also known as "Mary" and "Lola" returned to her creator on Sunday, September 17, 2017; she was 81.
Maria was born on November 10, 1935 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Refugio Zapata and Sofia Tejeda Zapata. Maria was raised by her step father Maximiano Saenz after her father's passing.
In the 1950's, she moved to the Coachella Valley with parents, brother Adalberto Zapata, Sr., and sister Hermalinda Saenz.
On July 11, 1970, she married the love of her life, William Russell Callaway, Sr. of whom she was married to for 30 yrs.
Maria worked at the Bee's Department store in Indio and later retired to devote herself to raising her children.
They had three children: San Juanita, Sofia Helen Ruth and William Russell Jr. and three grandchildren: Mikaela Marie, Mackenzie Rose, and Arianna Madison. She also left behind numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Maria was preceded in death by her husband William 16 year ago.
Funeral services for Maria will be held at Our Lady of Soledad Catholic Church in Coachella, California on Friday, September 29, 2017, with viewing at 9:45am, 10:30am rosary and 11:00am Mass. Burial will take place at the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians Tribal Cemetery on Tyler Street (off Avenue 50) in Coachella, CA.
